Legal Assistance
The Crime Victims Legal Assistance Project is a statewide program that provides free civil legal assistance to individuals who have experienced domestic violence or elder/vulnerable adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation. We strive to provide client-centered legal aid to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of the individuals we serve. To see if you are eligible click here.
CVLAP joins our colleagues at the Michigan Advocacy Program in condemning the recent murders and longstanding structural racism that deny justice and dignity to Black communities and people of color. We remain committed to advancing racial justice in solidarity with Black communities across Michigan through our individual client representation, systemic advocacy, and community partnerships.
We, the members of the Legal Services Association of Michigan, are devastated by the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many persons of color before them.
We stand in solidarity with Black communities throughout Michigan and the country in demanding justice and calling upon the law enforcement community to restrain and take responsibility for those in their ranks who disrespect the rights and lives of people of color.
We condemn white supremacy.
We condemn the denial of implicit bias and the refusal of individuals to address their biases.
We reject the comfort of neutrality and silence.
We understand that anti-racism is our responsibility and a necessary element of our work. Our work must include dismantling the structures and systems that allow and perpetuate white supremacy and racism.
We humbly commit to difficult conversations and community-led partnerships. We can and must do better.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. -MLK
